Okay, I'm putting together some of my promo stuff for the Small Press Expo in D.C., and I'm going to be making some bookmarks, basically to cement that the Crogan Adventures is a series in the minds of folks who buy the first book. Anyway, here are two designs I've come up with, and I could really use some opinions as to what you think might be best.
The one on the left is a little more dynamic, but the one on the right makes better use of the vertical canvas and may give a better sense of setting.
And yes, I know he's missing a hand; I screwed it up and have to redraw it. I may do away with the flying sweat-beads, too, as they might compete with the flying splinters for attention.
Anyway, thoughts? Which would get you more interested in the book?

I like the second one better. It just seems really unique and certainly peaks my curiosity about the series.
I too vote for the tower with the flag. I think it gives a better sense of a new historical setting (playing into your emphasis of a SERIES) while the one on the right could just be a fight scene from any era (even though the costume is there...) The calmness of the scene in #2 gives you time to consider the costume!
I like the second one as well...but...
I would like it more if he was waving. Like, "Hey...you stopped reading here!"
Check out how this mind of mine works.
I guess I'm in the minority so far. I like the one on the left better. It has a lot more action and lets the viewer know these books are full of action. I don't feel the sweat beads compete with the splinters either.
Both of them are really neat!
you know where i stand. They both look nice. The tower is a stronger design. I like the action of the first. I still think by popping a low transparency version of the first one, in the tower, you'll have it.
If you promise that he will get another hand, I would vote for the action shot. The composition is much more dynamic and immediately caught my eye.
But if you did BOTH of them, I would walk by your table and say something like, "Wow! You did TWO! These are BOTH great! Can I have one of each?"
Just sayin'.
Both are great, though I enjoy the second one a little more because, as you mentioned, it plays more strongly with the vertical bookmark shape.
I vote for the first, plus a hand, minus the sweat beads. I say this as the graphic novel buyer for a children's bookstore trying to get the attention of 10-14 year-olds.
The second is interesting, but doesn't promise action and adventure. It suggests it, sure--but it doesn't promise...
Perhaps you could do the tower with some ne'er-do-well sneaking up the side with conflict in mind. That way you have the composition with a taste of the action. A little chocolate in your peanut butter.
