Some character design sketches

Crazy busy the last couple of weeks, with teaching and a lot of freelance illustration jobs. Sorry for not posting more regularly.

Here's some character design sketches (everything's still in the very rough stages right now) for the next Crogan Book, Crogan's March.

Hope everyone has fun in San Diego!

Chris, I am totally jealous. The Crogan series following a family's lineage throughout all of your favorite periods in (mostly) western history is genius. I can't wait to get my hands on Crogan's Revenge.

Great characters. I wonder if you are following the family chronologically, or jumping around.

No, I'm definitely jumping around. More likely than not, it'll be a back and forth between ancient and modern (by ancient, I mean 1700-1865, and modern being post US civil war to present). That way, I won't get bored with the subject matter. So it'll more than likely be ancient, modern, ancient, modern, etc.

I like very much your art. I've met your blog recently and I think you're a great cartoonist. Congratulations from Spain ;)

Very cool. Chronological would definitely get tedious!

Something else I wonder about is, even with all the books planned, would it ever be possible to revisit the pirate? It seemed like there could be more stories told about that guy.

Actually, I made sure that the pirate story - Catfoot's introduction to the world of piracy - took place at the very START of the "Golden Age," of piracy, meaning that he'd be about 36 or so at its height (the era of Blackbeard, Calico Jack, Anne Bonny, etc). 36, and a well-seasoned and slightly grizzled pirate captain.

Some of the books are designed so that the character could be used multiple times... the Gunfighter would have been of conscription age during the civil war, for example - and I've got LOTS of stories in mind, so there's no reason why you won't see certain characters again...
